Ulta Beauty Returns: Tested Makeup, Payment Methods and Marketplace Orders
Ulta Beauty generally accepts most new or gently used products within 30 days of purchase for an eligible refund to the original payment method; returns made on days 31–60 generally qualify for merchandise credit instead. Proof of purchase must be available or verifiable in Ulta’s system. The key is not simply whether you opened a lipstick: check the product’s condition, which payment was used and whether all original components are present.
Opened a shade you did not like?
The official guest-services return guidance allows many gently used products to be considered, provided they meet its conditions and contain their original components. A foundation tested once is different from a nearly empty bottle; Ulta checks return eligibility and may limit returns based on its verification process. Maintain the original package, applicators and accessories while testing a shade if you think you may return it.
Some product types are excluded or subject to extra restrictions: Ulta says gift cards are not returnable; wigs and hair extensions purchased through an Ulta salon and intimate wellness devices cannot be returned, and Mini Brands Capsules must be unopened and sealed. Read the actual product’s terms rather than relying on an article that describes a generic beauty-store return policy.
Proof of purchase and an ID matter as much as the product
Ulta’s policy is unusually specific about identification. For a normal return, bring the physical government-issued ID required by the store and provide a phone number or email; you also need a receipt or a transaction Ulta can verify in its system. An order confirmation on your phone is useful, but confirm that it shows the actual purchase rather than only a cart or shipping notification. If your friend purchased the item as a gift, the method by which the original purchase can be verified affects which remedy the store can offer.
A product can be gently used and still be ineligible if it is a type excluded by the policy, if required original components are missing, or if Ulta cannot verify it. Check the current US Guest Services policy before driving across town with salon extensions, an intimate wellness device or an opened Mini Brands capsule. The policy also permits validation and limits when return activity suggests misuse. A counter associate may therefore ask for documentation even if you are still within the ordinary date window.
One order can produce more than one refund method
The original-payment window and the merchandise-credit window should not be described as interchangeable. A return eligible within 30 days may go back to the original tender, while an eligible return on days 31 through 60 ordinarily receives merchandise credit. If an online order was bought with a gift card, the gift-card-funded amount is handled under the specific gift-card rules; if a third-party payment provider was used, the in-store route can offer a different type of refund. Ask for the final breakdown rather than assuming that every item in a mixed-tender basket will produce one card credit.
Ulta also describes distinct treatment for gift-receipt returns, so a recipient should not promise themselves cash for an unwanted fragrance. A gift receipt within the stated window generally supports an exchange of equal or lesser value or merchandise credit. If you purchased multiple items with a promotional offer, bring the original order details and ask staff to explain the value assigned to the specific returned item. A coupon applied to the order is not itself money that can be refunded separately.
Use the original payment window correctly
Ulta’s published rule divides the 60-day eligibility period: a qualifying return within 30 days may be refunded to the original form of payment; from 31 through 60 days the ordinary outcome is merchandise credit. A gift receipt generally leads to an exchange for an item of equal or lesser value or merchandise credit within the stated period. When the original purchase was paid with an Ulta gift card, the refund is issued on a new gift card. Returns of purchases funded through certain online payment providers can have a different in-store refund method.
Take proof of purchase or ensure your original purchase can be located in Ulta’s system. The retailer says it requires a physical government-issued ID and a phone number or email for returns, even when an order is otherwise verifiable. A purchase that cannot be verified and has no receipt is ineligible under the published policy. Save the emailed order confirmation instead of assuming an online account can always recover a guest checkout.
A marketplace package is not necessarily Ulta inventory
Ulta’s online marketplace presents an important exception to a simplistic “online equals in-store stock” assumption. The retailer’s policy provides an eligible return route for products sold and fulfilled by a UB Marketplace seller, but the item travels back to that seller rather than into ordinary Ulta inventory. Initiate the process from the matching online order and follow the return instructions provided for that seller. The published marketplace policy also specifies how multi-tender payments are credited; read it before expecting a split refund to mirror your initial card-and-gift-card payment.
If the purchase came from DoorDash, Instacart, Uber Eats or TikTok Shop, follow Ulta’s channel-specific instructions. The policy does not treat all delivery-platform orders alike, and TikTok Shop purchases are not eligible for returns at Ulta stores or warehouses. Before requesting a store visit for an app delivery, find the receipt in the app, check whether Ulta’s current rules accept that type of purchase and confirm which account would receive the credit. Showing up with an item but no usable platform receipt may not give an associate a way to process the transaction.
Damaged makeup, missing components and product concerns
When a palette arrives broken or a pump is defective, photograph the packaging, batch information and damage before disposing of anything. Report the issue using the channel named on the order and ask whether the appropriate resolution is a replacement, exchange or refund; do not ship leaking contents without checking carrier restrictions. For a product merely unsuitable for your skin tone, the ordinary gently-used return rules may be relevant. For a product that appears contaminated or physically dangerous, stop using it and seek product-specific guidance rather than conducting further tests to prove a fault.
Brands sometimes offer separate product guarantees or manufacturer warranty support. Those do not automatically change Ulta’s recorded purchase date or refund method. If you purchased the same brand directly elsewhere, return instructions must come from that seller. For example, our Aveda direct-store return guide applies to qualifying Aveda orders, not to an Aveda product shown on an Ulta receipt. This distinction is particularly important for gift sets, limited editions and bundles whose contents may be tracked as a single retail SKU.
Returning an online order without the wrong label
For an eligible order placed on Ulta.com, the retailer’s online terms describe several routes: create a self-service shipping label from order history, obtain an online QR code for a participating UPS drop-off or bring the items to an Ulta retail location when permitted. Follow the route offered for that order rather than writing the corporate address on your own package. Include the items and components identified in the instructions and retain the drop-off receipt until the refund or credit is confirmed.
If the product was purchased directly from Aveda.com, an Ulta register cannot process that original transaction. See our Aveda returns guide for the brand’s separate online process. For an Ulta order containing multiple items, start by identifying which item is actually being returned, the purchase date and its payment method; those details resolve most confusion between a refund and store credit.
Holiday gifts and two practical return scenarios
Some retailers publish temporary holiday extensions, but do not add days to Ulta’s standard windows without an official offer covering the actual purchase date and item. If you buy a fragrance as a present weeks before handing it over, keep the original receipt and verify the current seasonal terms while shopping. Gift packaging, a personalized note or the recipient’s unboxing date does not automatically reset the store’s purchase-based clock. If you are unsure of the recipient’s preferences, discuss gift-receipt options before paying.
Scenario A: A customer orders foundation, tries a small amount and discovers the shade is wrong. They keep the bottle, outer package and transaction details, then ask for the available remedy within the relevant original-payment or merchandise-credit period. Scenario B: A customer discovers a broken eye-shadow palette delivered through a third-party shopping app. They identify the order channel first and use the documented process for that channel; they do not assume that Ulta can treat it as a conventional Ulta.com parcel.
Ulta returns FAQ
Do I need a physical ID? The retailer’s US return policy says a physical government-issued ID and a phone number or email are required for returns.
Can I send a TikTok Shop order to Ulta? No; follow the TikTok purchase channel’s return instructions instead of mailing it to Ulta.
How long does a mailed refund take? Ulta’s posted guidance says processing can take up to 30 business days after the distribution center receives the product, with further payment posting time.
Does a free promotional gift have a cash refund value? Do not assign one without the offer terms and original transaction; ask how the promotion affects the eligible return value.
