Microsoft Return Policy

Microsoft Store Return Policy: Devices, Games and Subscriptions

Quick answer: For most eligible physical products bought from the U.S. Microsoft Store, Microsoft advertises a 60-day return period measured from receipt, provided the item is in like-new condition with its original packaging and contents. Important exclusions apply, and the retailer does not take back hardware purchased from an unrelated seller. Apps, digital games and Microsoft 365 subscriptions follow different refund or cancellation paths. The safest starting point is the order history for the specific Microsoft account or guest purchase: the available “Request a return” action is a better indication of the order’s actual eligibility than a general headline about free returns.

Where you purchased the product determines your return route

The U.S. Microsoft Store return policy says the retailer’s direct-purchase rules apply to items bought from Microsoft, not Microsoft-branded goods bought at another shop. A Surface purchased through a local electronics chain should be checked against that chain’s original receipt and return process. The Surface manufacturer warranty may remain relevant if the laptop develops a covered defect, but it is not a replacement for the third-party retailer’s ordinary preference-based return terms. For a comparison of a different direct computer seller, see our Dell return guide; Dell’s procedures do not transfer to a Microsoft Store transaction.

Before initiating any shipment, identify whether the invoice describes hardware, an app or game, a subscription, an accessory or a purchase at a Microsoft Experience Center. A customer can find a Microsoft Store online purchase in their Microsoft account’s order history. If they checked out without a signed-in account, the official return page directs them to Guest Order Lookup. A business purchase may use a separate work-account order workflow. The customer should use the order type that matches the receipt rather than creating a new personal account and assuming the missing business or guest purchase has no possible resolution.

The sixty-day hardware period is not universal

Microsoft states that most qualifying physical purchases from its online store can be returned within 60 days from the date the customer receives the product. Items should be in like-new condition, in original packaging, with parts, components, manuals and documentation included. The published physical-product terms identify exclusions, including Surface Hub, HoloLens, Windows DevKit and certain ROG Xbox Ally models, rather than presenting the 60-day benefit as unrestricted. The page also mentions a limit of up to five product returns per eligible order purchase. Check the exact device listing and order-specific conditions before telling someone that an unusual product follows the standard Surface or accessory procedure.

The start date matters: Microsoft describes the period from receiving the eligible product, not necessarily the day a pre-order was placed or the date the card was first authorized. Keep the delivery confirmation if a Surface took several days to ship. However, “60 days” does not mean used or modified goods are automatically accepted on day fifty-nine. A customer who has dismantled a device, lost important components or damaged it must review the eligible condition requirements and the defect or warranty route separately. A holiday-specific promotion can have additional terms; those are not permission to ignore product-specific exclusions or condition standards.

How to request and ship an eligible physical return

Open the original Microsoft order in account order history and look for the “Request a return” option next to the relevant item. Microsoft’s device-return instructions say to follow the prompts and obtain the prepaid shipping label for a qualifying self-service return. If the button is absent, do not assume that changing the account email will restore eligibility. Check whether the wrong account or guest checkout was used, whether the purchase is of a restricted product, or whether the self-service function is unavailable; contact Microsoft Store Sales support if the item cannot be assessed online. Preserve the order number and delivery date when discussing the problem.

Return only the product and contents authorized on that return. Use protective packaging; include the accessories, power supply, cables, manuals and other components specified for that original item. The Store return page says individual components of a product bundle cannot be returned on their own: the bundle must go back together to qualify under its terms. Remove personal files, deactivate device access and sign out where practical before sending hardware containing account information, while following Microsoft’s separate device-preparation guidance. Keep the shipping-label email and obtain a carrier acceptance receipt; a printed label alone does not show that the return actually entered transit.

A Microsoft Experience Center purchase has to be checked against the receipt and that location’s applicable rules, rather than blindly mailing an item under an online-order flow. If a replacement configuration is desired, ask whether support will facilitate an exchange or whether the customer should complete an authorized return and place a distinct new order. The two routes can have different price and stock implications. If the buyer used a promotional bundle, verify whether all items must be included before purchasing a standalone replacement. Never ship a device to an address copied from an older support forum post when the current return authorization specifies another destination.

How and when the refund is issued

The Store and Microsoft Support return guidance describe an eligible physical-product refund back to the original payment method. After the item is received and its return eligibility confirmed, support says refunds are generally processed within three to five business days, with bank posting taking additional time. Microsoft notes that original shipping and handling charges may be excluded in certain ordinary returns. Record the parcel’s actual delivery at the return center, the acceptance notice and the refund notification separately; they are three distinct events. A customer should not treat a courier tracking update as proof that the bank has already received the credit.

When a refund appears missing, compare the order-history status with the payment account used for the initial purchase. If Microsoft shows the refund issued but the card statement has not updated, ask the payment provider about its posting time and then contact Microsoft with the original order and case number if needed. An authorization hold for an unshipped order can look different from a refund of a completed payment. The buyer should identify the actual transaction before filing a second cancellation or return request, especially when a pre-order, a shipment and a digital add-on were all billed in separate amounts.

Digital games, apps and subscriptions are separate purchase types

The sixty-day physical-item promise does not automatically make a downloaded game, movie or app returnable. The official Store policy says digital goods, including games, apps, add-on content, subscriptions and media, generally are not eligible for routine returns except where an applicable offer or law provides a refund entitlement. For a digital game or app, use the purchase’s refund-request route in the correct Xbox or Microsoft order history and check its individual eligibility. If a game was bought through a third-party store, the Microsoft Store physical-device page does not establish that seller’s obligations. Avoid advising a player to ship a downloaded game code as though it were an unopened controller.

A recurring Microsoft 365 subscription has a cancellation process, not a parcel return. Microsoft’s subscription refund policy explains that eligibility can depend on timing, the specific subscription and purchase country, and it describes its current direct-purchase refund conditions. Cancellation of recurring billing and the issuance of money back are different events: a customer can successfully stop future charges without qualifying for a refund of the latest charge. Check the subscription in the correct Microsoft account and read the eligibility message presented during cancellation. If a subscription was bought through Apple or Google billing, Microsoft directs customers to the corresponding platform’s support for that purchase route.

Canceling an unshipped order and dealing with a defective device

For a physical order that has not shipped, Microsoft’s order-cancellation instructions say to look for “Cancel item” in order history before shipment or final charging. If the option has disappeared because the device has shipped, the appropriate route may be to receive the item and initiate an eligible return, not to claim that a cancellation confirmation has already occurred. Watch the inbox for a genuine cancellation email and verify that the order status changed. If the buyer sees a pending authorization on their card, that bank hold must be distinguished from a completed sale and its subsequent refund.

A Surface that will not power on is not simply a change-of-mind return. While the ordinary eligibility period is open, describe the fault and ask for the approved return or exchange path. After that period, Microsoft’s device support guidance directs customers with a potentially covered defect toward the manufacturer-warranty service process. Save the serial number, purchase record, screen or hardware error descriptions and any support case number. Do not promise that warranty support will always refund the original price; the applicable hardware warranty and actual fault determine what support can offer. If the product was damaged after purchase, disclose that condition rather than calling it a factory defect.

Holiday orders, price changes and gift purchases

Microsoft’s live returns page has displayed a dated holiday extension for a particular past shopping season; that historical promotion is not automatically a rule for a newly placed holiday order. Look for a currently published seasonal offer, its qualifying purchase dates and excluded devices, or follow the usual product-specific terms. A gift recipient should obtain the original order number and receipt before assuming the gift-opening day restarts the return clock. For a gifted digital code, opening or redeeming it may affect eligibility, so read the product-specific terms and avoid comparing it to a boxed physical controller.

Microsoft also describes price-protection offers on qualifying Store products, subject to exact product, retailer and period restrictions. A lower advertised price does not by itself establish that every Microsoft purchase can be refunded and re-bought without a return; check whether a price adjustment is available before sending back a functioning device. A customer with a qualifying item may prefer a supported price-adjustment request to exposing a return shipment to loss or running out of stock. The price-protection program is separate from the physical-product refund conditions and does not turn an excluded software license into eligible hardware.

Three situations: choose the purchase-specific process

Scenario: a Surface was bought directly and is now unwanted

The buyer received an eligible Surface ten days ago, kept the original packaging and has not damaged the device. They sign into the account used at checkout, find the order and select the return action, checking that the model is not an excluded category. They prepare the device for shipment, include the required accessories and retain the carrier receipt. The 60-day headline is relevant because this was a qualifying direct physical purchase, but acceptance and timing still depend on complying with the current conditions. They should not instead ask a different electronics retailer to process the Microsoft Store invoice.

Scenario: a game was downloaded yesterday

A customer downloaded an Xbox game from the Microsoft Store and wants their money back after deciding it is not enjoyable. They should check the game’s Xbox order-history refund function and its specific conditions, not use the 60-day Surface return label. If the refund option exists, they provide the true reason and await the eligibility assessment. A digital purchase may be excluded from routine refunds, and merely downloading it recently does not guarantee approval. If the purchase was billed through a different storefront, the buyer should follow that transaction’s seller and account record.

Scenario: a Microsoft 365 renewal was unexpected

A subscriber sees a new recurring charge and wants future billing to stop. First, they identify the subscription under the account that was actually charged and follow its cancellation procedure. They then review the direct Microsoft subscription refund criteria and any eligibility message; stopping renewal alone does not establish that the latest payment will be refunded. If the subscription was purchased from a mobile app store, the billing platform may handle the request. Preserve the invoice, cancellation confirmation and any issued refund status instead of comparing a software renewal to a returned physical Xbox accessory.
