Old Navy Return Policy

Old Navy Returns: Delivery Dates, Free Mail Labels and Encore Credit

Quick answer: If a pair of jeans arrived yesterday but you ordered it two weeks ago, Old Navy generally measures the 30-day online return period from delivery, not checkout. A purchase made in a physical store uses the purchase date instead. Eligible items can usually be returned free in an Old Navy store or by following the online prepaid-return process. Check the garment and seller details before starting: final-sale merchandise and items fulfilled by third-party sellers have different restrictions.

Choose the correct return clock

For a mailed order, note the delivery date shown in tracking; for a store purchase, keep the register receipt; for buy-online-pickup-in-store orders, Old Navy says the 30-day period starts when the order is ready for pickup. These three dates need not match. Its pickup instructions explain the ready-for-pickup starting point.

Old Navy’s published family-of-brands return FAQ also describes a seasonal extension for qualifying purchases made October 15–December 24: the return deadline is January 15 of the following year or the ordinary 30-day deadline, whichever is later. Purchases shipped and sold by third-party sellers do not receive that holiday extension. Keep proof of purchase and verify the terms applying to your item rather than assuming every winter order qualifies.

How to handle an order containing three brands and a third-party item

Gap Inc. allows an eligible combined mail return for purchases from several of its own brands within the applicable window, but that convenience does not turn every mixed cart into one universal refund transaction. Read the brand and seller against each order line before packing. A babyGap piece purchased through Gap belongs to the Gap channel; a pair of Old Navy jeans belongs to Old Navy. For an ordinary in-store return, the company says you cannot bring a purchase from one family brand to another brand’s register. This matters when an online parcel contains both a parent-sized sweater and a child’s outfit: one shipping carton does not prove that either store will accept every item at its counter.

A garment sold and shipped by an independent third-party seller must follow that seller’s mail-return instructions rather than being presented to an Old Navy store. Items identified as return-by-mail-only also cannot be handed to a store associate. Check each product page and invoice line for these markers while the original packaging is still available. If you need to return more than one parcel, preserve each individual tracking number. For the separate Gap baby-clothing context, our babyGap return guide explains why the retailer named on the confirmation is the useful starting point, not only the label sewn into the garment.

Hypothetical: a birthday shipment of mixed-size clothing

Suppose a parent orders a dress from Old Navy, a baby outfit from Gap and a marketplace accessory in one checkout session. The dress and baby outfit arrive together, but the third-party item arrives later. The parent should not choose a single deadline based on the first package’s date and mail all three to the same return address. Instead, open order history for each item, confirm the delivery date and seller, choose the available return method and retain each confirmation separately. This is a practical example of the published purchase-channel rules, not an assurance that all three items will qualify.

The label on the product can change the return route

Inspect the item and your order details before walking into a store. Under the official FAQ, final-sale items cannot be returned or exchanged. Garments should remain unworn and unwashed; merchandise marked “mail only” must be returned by mail. The rules for swimwear, sunglasses, masks and maternity items include additional restrictions. A normal online Old Navy item may be returnable at an Old Navy store, but an item sold by an outside seller may need to go back through the seller’s mail-return process.

Even though Gap and Old Navy share a parent company, the FAQ says merchandise must be returned to the brand where it was purchased. A babyGap outfit belongs in the Gap return channel, not an Old Navy register. See our separate babyGap guide for the infant-clothing context.

Two ways to return an eligible online order

  1. In store: bring the garment, shipping confirmation (on a phone or paper) and the payment card used for the purchase to the appropriate Old Navy store. Check “mail only” or third-party restrictions before traveling.
  2. By mail: start the return through Old Navy’s official online process and use its prepaid label or available drop-off option. Do not invent a warehouse address or pay for your own shipment before checking whether the provided method applies.

The official shipping and returns overview states that eligible in-store returns and mail returns with its prepaid process are free. Store purchases cannot simply be mailed back under the standard online-return instructions.

Special product conditions you can check before removing tags

Old Navy’s detailed official FAQ identifies more than the familiar unworn-and-unwashed requirement. Swimwear must retain the original price tags and hygienic liner; new sunglasses need their attached tags and purchase proof for ordinary returns; masks are listed as final sale. The company also directs Old Navy Beauty Co items to in-store returns and excludes opened or used beauty products from ordinary returns. Check a product’s final-sale notice before purchasing a deeply reduced color or size. A low price does not override an explicit final-sale label, and a damaged product should be reported as damaged rather than disguised as an ordinary change-of-mind return.

Do not confuse Old Navy’s Kids Guarantee with a year-long right to return children’s clothing that no longer fits. The retailer’s FAQ describes a quality guarantee for specified girls’ and boys’ clothing and shoes with manufacturing defects within 365 days of purchase, subject to proof-of-purchase and exclusions. It distinguishes defects such as broken closures or seams from damage due to stains, accidents, misuse or a child growing out of a size. Quality claims under that guarantee must be made in an Old Navy or Old Navy Outlet store rather than handled as an ordinary online return. Keep the defective item and a picture of the affected seam or closure and bring its original receipt or shipping confirmation.

Example: a zipper fails after the ordinary return period

A parent whose child’s jacket develops a faulty zipper several months after purchase should identify the product as qualifying children’s apparel, retain the receipt and describe the failure to the store. The parent should not simply select “size too small” in the ordinary online-return portal or assume all children’s accessories receive the same treatment. A store associate must still assess whether the quality guarantee’s conditions are met; keep the discussion and any resulting receipt for your records.

What the Encore extension actually gives you

The standard refund period remains 30 days. Eligible Premier members may have up to 45 days and qualifying All-Access cardmembers up to 60 days to return merchandise for a Merchandise Return Card after day 30, subject to the membership and purchase-identification terms. The extension is not a promise of a late cash or original-card refund. Check the Encore program FAQ to confirm your tier and transaction eligibility.

Tracking the money after a return

Old Navy can process an accepted return before your card issuer posts the credit. Record your return confirmation, original order number, and whether the return was handled in store or by carrier. For split tender, gift cards or third-party payment methods, consult the original-payment instructions in the return FAQ; the refund route may not look like a single credit-card reversal. If the item was damaged or defective when it arrived, photograph it and contact support promptly instead of treating it as a normal unwanted-garment return.

What a merchandise return card means for Encore members

Old Navy’s standard return period is not interchangeable with its membership-based extension. The family-of-brands FAQ explains that eligible Premier members may receive up to 45 days and qualifying All-Access cardmembers up to 60 days for a merchandise return card when a return falls after the ordinary 30-day period. The benefit depends on satisfying membership-identification and purchase conditions; it is not a promise of an original-card cash refund two months later. Check the applicable tier displayed in the account used at checkout and keep the membership identifier that was provided in store. When a store return is processed under an extension, ask which tender will be issued before accepting the transaction.

For an ordinary approved refund, a card payment is generally credited back to that same card; gift-card purchases are credited to the original or replacement gift card. If you redeemed rewards points, the brand’s published refund guide describes conversion of the value back into points under program rules. A mailed exchange can involve the original garment’s return plus a new charge for the replacement; track both transactions and do not interpret a new charge as evidence that the return itself was rejected. The company’s return instructions say a card issuer may take additional business days to post a processed credit. Record the return confirmation date before contacting support about a missing credit.

Holiday purchases and gifts: which clock applies?

Do not assume every winter purchase receives a holiday grace period. Review the officially posted seasonal window, eligible dates, third-party exclusions and condition rules for the actual shopping season. Gift purchasers should keep a gift receipt or order number accessible without sending the recipient full payment-card details. A gift recipient may receive merchandise credit rather than a card refund to themselves. If a pair of holiday pajamas is final sale or has already been washed, an extended date does not necessarily make it returnable. For a last-minute size exchange, check local stock and whether the original purchase can be returned before buying a replacement.
